Nespresso Vertuo vs Original for Airbnb: the locked pod system and what it costs you per year

Nespresso Vertuo vs Original for Airbnb: the locked pod system and what it costs you per year

My Edinburgh Old Town flat has a Nespresso Vertuo Next. I bought it because it looked better than the Original line machine I had before, made larger coffees, and — I'll admit it — the marketing was convincing. Two years in, I have an opinion on whether that was a good call for an Airbnb property. The short version: it depends entirely on how you buy pods, and the Original line has an advantage that I didn't fully understand when I switched.

Here's the thing about Vertuo machines: Nespresso owns the format completely. Every Vertuo capsule has a unique barcode printed on the rim that the machine reads via a laser before brewing — it sets the extraction parameters, the cup size, the rotation speed. Without that barcode, the machine won't run. And because Nespresso holds the patents on this system until approximately July 2029, no third-party manufacturer can legally make compatible capsules. You are buying into a closed ecosystem.

Which.co.uk puts it plainly: with a Vertuo machine, you can only use Nespresso-branded capsules. There are no compatible alternatives. The one exception is a small Starbucks-branded Vertuo range available at some UK retailers — but that's a licensed partnership with Nespresso, not an independent competitor.

For an Airbnb host buying at volume, this matters a lot.

The per-pod maths, honestly

Official Nespresso Original pods run from about 47p to 79p per capsule depending on the blend. That's expensive for a budget host, but the Original line has something Vertuo doesn't: full third-party competition. Lavazza, L'OR, Café Royal, CafePod, and several own-label supermarket ranges all make compatible pods. You can buy Original-compatible pods from as low as 20p per capsule if you're buying in volume through Amazon Business or Costco.

I wrote a longer post last year on the per-pod maths for UK hosts specifically, but the short version: across 3,200 pods for five properties over a year, the difference between official Nespresso Original at ~60p average and own-brand compatible at ~22p average works out to roughly £1,200 saved. Not small.

Vertuo pods run from 47p to 99p per capsule (the larger Alto and Carafe sizes are at the top of that range). Those are Nespresso prices, because there are no other Vertuo prices. If I buy 3,200 Vertuo pods at an average of 65p, that's £2,080. The same volume of compatible Original pods: around £700. The gap is £1,380 per year across five properties.

That's not a trivial number for a small portfolio.

What Vertuo actually does better

The coffees are genuinely different. Vertuo's centrifugal extraction creates a thick, caramel-coloured crema on espressos that the Original line doesn't quite match. The larger cup sizes — Gran Lungo, Mug, Alto — are better suited to the way most British guests drink coffee: a proper cup, not a small espresso. Guests who travel internationally and know Nespresso specifically sometimes prefer Vertuo machines.

The machine design is also better for an Airbnb context. The Vertuo Next and Vertuo Pop both have top-loading pod mechanisms that are impossible to use wrong — no knob to turn, no clicking into place. Guests who've never used a pod machine manage it without calling me. My Original line machines got more questions.

And the capsule range has expanded since I first switched. There are around 40 Vertuo blends available as of 2026, including decaf, flavoured, and two or three that have become genuinely popular with guests. The Bianco Forte is consistently one of the more commented-on amenities in my reviews at the Old Town flat.

Which machine for which property

My honest breakdown after running both:

Vertuo: better for properties where the machine is a visible amenity. Higher-end flats, properties with good kitchens, city-centre lets where the listing photos and the in-person experience both matter. The machine looks better, the coffees taste better to most guests, and the ease of use reduces the friction. Accept that you're paying Nespresso-only pod prices and price that into your welcome pack budget.

Original line: better for volume buyers and multi-property operators. Five flats in Edinburgh and Brighton, running three to four turnovers a week each — the pod cost savings are real money. Buy Café Royal or L'OR from Amazon Business in 100-packs. Keep three or four Official Nespresso Chiaro or Volluto pods in the welcome pack (they look better and guests recognise the Nespresso branding) and refill with compatible pods in the capsule holder. Some hosts do this exclusively with compatibles; I put two official pods in the visible holder and keep the rest in a drawer for turnover restocking.

My Bruntsfield flat (which I position as a mid-range city break property) has an Original line machine with a mix of official and L'OR compatible pods. The Brighton Kemptown flat (slightly more premium positioning, and where I've invested more in the kitchen) has a Vertuo. The Lake District cottage has a bean-to-cup machine and no pod machine at all — but that's a different conversation.

The capsule storage issue

One thing I didn't think about before switching to Vertuo: capsule holders. The standard Original line capsule holders — the round spinning carousel, the drawer-type, the vertical tower — are everywhere on Amazon from £8. Vertuo capsules are a different size and shape (dome-top, slightly wider). Dedicated Vertuo holders exist but there are fewer options and they're typically more expensive. Small point, but if you're fitting out a kitchen with existing storage solutions, check compatibility before ordering.

What I'd do if I were starting a new property today

Original line machine if it's a budget to mid-range property or if I'm buying more than about 600 pods a year across my portfolio. The economics are clear and the machine reliability is well-established.

Vertuo if it's a higher-end let, if the kitchen is a genuine feature of the listing, or if I'm putting out a small number of pods (under 300/year per property) and the quality difference is worth more to me than the price difference.

But I'd know what I was getting into before I bought. The Vertuo ecosystem is excellent as long as you're comfortable with Nespresso setting the price for every capsule you'll ever buy on that machine.
